Students are "easy targets" says convicted burglar

A convicted burglar has spoken out to warn students returning from the Christmas break to protect their new gadgets. Although this is from West Yorkshire, it applies to all Manchester and Stockport students.

According to 33-year-old Peter Findlay who has served 4 years in prison for burglary, students are a 'ridiculously easy' target, particularly in January when student accommodation is filled with new laptops, iPods and other expensive equipment.

Peter is now working with West Yorkshire Probation and West Yorkshire Police to turn his life around and has agreed to take part in a short video advising the public of the simple measures they can take to protect their belongings and avoid becoming victims of burglary.

In the video, Peter explains how student homes in particular can be easy to break into thanks to unlocked or poorly maintained doors and windows and expensive equipment being left on display.

West Yorkshire Police is seeing a reduction in burglaries with 485 fewer burglaries in November 2011 compared to the same month in the previous year. However, January traditionally sees a rise in the number of reports.

The Force is keen for people to take note of these simple crime prevention tips;

Lock all of your doors and windows even when you’re in.
Remove keys from all locks.
Property-mark all of your expensive items using a UV pen.
Keep your belongings hidden in a safe and secure place. Do not leave them on show!

Chief Superintendent Simon Willsher, head of the Force’s Local Policing Support Department, said: “Every year people’s homes are targeted by burglars who are on the lookout for Christmas gifts and sale bargains.

“Some simple steps to keep expensive items out of sight and prevent easy access to your home will deter criminals. We also encourage neighbours to look out for and repeat suspicious activity.

“This latest video provides a first hand account of what burglars look for and why students in particular are so susceptible to becoming a burglary victim. It is important to listen to and take note of what Peter is saying. He knows as well as anyone about what a burglar looks for.

This man is wanted in connection with a burglary in Tameside. Police have released the image of the suspected burglar who stole jewellery from a house on Edna Street, Hyde.

Two men knocked on the door of the property at around 3pm on December 2. When nobody answered, they forced their way in and went upstairs, searching for valuables.

A 24-year-old man was in a spare bedroom and heard the noise. He climbed out of the window and ran to the front, trying to shut the door to keep the men inside.

A third man, who was driving a silver or light blue Mercedes C Class car, sounded the horn, alerting the men inside. They ran out of the back door before getting in the car and driving off.

The first man is described as being white, 30 years old, 6ft tall and had ginger hair in a Mohican style. He was wearing a brown jacket and gloves.

The second man was wearing a white jacket, dark scarf that was covering his face, a hat and sunglasses.

The driver of the car was white, between 25 and 30 years old and of stocky build. He was wearing a black Adidas hooded top with red stripes.

Pc Jon Cheadle, from the volume crime team, said: "Obviously the victim was shocked to hear people breaking in, especially at that time of day.

"Thankfully he escaped unharmed and managed to get a good look at the men. We believe someone out there must recognise the image of this man and if they do, I would urge them to contact police as soon as possible."

A burglar's to-do list that detailed a series of potential targets has been published by Greater Manchester Police in an attempt to raise awareness of crime over the Christmas period.

The handwritten note, titled "lined up grafts", included the location of keys to cars which have been left on view, bikes left unlocked and homes where easy-picking items have been left exposed.

The would-be thief also listed the tools needed to carry out each crime including including hammers, screwdrivers and a coat hanger.

Police constable Andy Pickering of the GMP said the list showed how criminals identified their targets and should serve as a reminder to householders on how to protect themselves from falling victim.

“While most thieves are opportunistic there are some who are more organised and will systematically search out the weaknesses in your neighbourhood for the easiest homes, cars, pedal bikes or other valuables on your property to target and steal," he said.

The police are encouraging Manchester residents to make their own 'to-do list' of how to protect their homes.

“Being a victim of theft is hard at any time of the year but is particularly so during this special period in the calendar. You can help yourself by putting into action your own ‘to-do’ list to stop thieves going to work in your community," Pickering said.

GMP will be tweeting using the #to-do hashtag over Christmas in order to provide advice.

PUTTING A STOP TO METAL THEFT

Metal thieves did not stand a chance at a Kent construction site protected by RSI Videofied and VDT Direct's Webeye CMS.

Within minutes of the intrusion the thieves were deterred with live two-way PA and had disappeared before the police even arrived at the scene. Kent-based installer Eyeview Solutions, who look after the site which cannot be named for security reasons, are ecstatic with the success of the product so far.
Steve Dann, Managing Director at Eyeview says "[Videofied] is very unique. You don't need any power, it works using mobile telecommunications and it has no geographical limit, it is very flexible. Webeye is also very flexible as it enables you to get over the loading of software and it can be viewed anywhere. It's also nice for customers to be able to see their activations. "

One aspect of the Videofied system that Steve believes is most useful is the ability to rapidly deploy the devices. "Some of our customers have really high-value metals on site and with the use of Videofied, and the fact that you can move it around a site, means they can reposition it to protect metal at night."
During a recent incident, the system's ability for two-way voice challenging and the Webeye function that allows this action, proved most useful in the prevention of theft from a construction site. Within minutes of the activation a live voice challenge was issued and the intruders, who were hoping to steal high-value metal, hastily left the scene. Steve says "We've gotten lots of really good results where the voice challenge has scared people off and no damage has been caused. With Videofied and Webeye, you can see the activations and this limits false alarms. In the longterm, it's a very cost effective solution."
When asked if he would recommend the solution and why, Steve eagerly states "Definitely- and we do. It gives customers flexibility. The customer likes that he can check on his sites himself and check on the monitoring station. It is good value for money and works out less than a traditional system in the long-term because you can move it around easily. Senior lawyer outlines '12 crimes of Christmas'

A senior Crown Prosecution lawyer has warned the public of the dangers of what he called the "12 crimes of Christmas" - serious misdeeds which tend to increase during the festive season.

In a speech on Thursday, Nazir Afzal, chief prosecutor of the north-west of England, said that during the Christmas break his office saw an increase in domestic abuse, alcohol fuelled public disorder, burglary and sexual assault.

Afzal said there were also a spikes in:

• harassment and stalking, due to people trying to rekindle old relationships

• drink driving

• shoplifting

• street robbery

• drink fuelled assaults

• car theft

• making off without paying for services such as restaurant and bar tabs

• fraud, in its many offline and online forms.

He said other crimes also increased during the holidays, but that these crimes had the "greatest impact on the greatest number".

Afzal, who has chosen not to prosecute in recent cases where people used lethal violence to defend their homes against theft, said there was an increase in burglaries as criminals made off with easily available pickings under Christmas trees, and assured residents that they were "entitled to use reasonable force to defend yourself, your family and your property."

Thief's 'apology' to his victim - or not!!

It was supposed to be an exercise in remorse and rehabilitation.

However, the 16-year-old burglar used the opportunity of writing a letter to his victims to rub salt into their wounds.

Instead of apologising for stealing valuables from a family home, he told the owners that ‘to be honest I’m not bothered or sorry about the fact that I burgled your house’.

The teenager arrogantly said the raid was their own fault and told them off for their ‘dumb mistakes’ in making their property a target for thieves such as him.

The habitual offender, who has not been identified, was put on an Intensive Supervision and Surveillance Programme as punishment for his latest crime.

Described as the ‘most rigorous’ form of non-custodial sentence available for young offenders, writing letters to victims is part of the programme meant to make them change their ways. In the case of this teenager, it clearly didn’t work.

His letter was stopped by the authorities before it reached the victims and has now been released as part of an anti-burglary campaign. Written in a scrawl and littered with spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, the letter is addressed: ‘Dear Victim.’
He wrote: ‘I don’t no why I am writing a letter to you! I have been forced to write this letter by ISSP.
‘To be honest I’m not bothered or sorry about the fact that I burgled your house. Basicly it was your own fault anyways. I’m going to run you through the dumb mistakes you made. Firstly you didn’t draw your curtains which most people now to do before they go to sleep.
‘Secondly your dumb you live in Stainburns a high risk burglary area and your thick enough to leave your downstairs kitchen window open. I wouldnt do that in a million years.
‘But anyways I don’t feel sorry for you and Im not going to show any sympath or remores.’
The burglar stole a computer games console, camera, camcorder, two TVs and two speakers in the raid in Moortown, Leeds.

Most of the items were recovered and the teenager was arrested. West Yorkshire Police said he had previous convictions for similar offences. In court he was given a 12-month ISSP order, designed to control the behaviour of young offenders through ‘community-based surveillance’.

Chief Inspector Melanie Jones said: ‘The contents of the letter are disgusting but it highlights the cold and dispassionate way burglars select a property to target.’

Local councillor Sharon Hamilton said: ‘How dare he? It’s not for him to be telling people how to look after their homes. He has no right to be breaking into their homes.’

A spokesman for the UK Neighbourhood Watch Trust said the letter was ‘appalling’, but added: ‘Christmas is coming and people like to leave their curtains open so people can see their lights and their tree, but they need to realise the criminal is looking at their TV, radio, computer and the presents under the tree.’

Survey shows 13% rise in household theft.

The latest British Crime Survey (BCS) shows a 2% rise in crime, despite the police showing a 4% fall in recorded crime.
The biggest change, however is the quarterly crime figures, which cover the 12 months to the second quarter between April and June and do not include the summer riots. They show a 13% rise in "other household theft", which covers thefts from gardens and sheds, the apparent 10% rise in burglary, according to the BCS.
The Alarming Man suggests alarms that detect intruders in outbuildings and the grounds should be installed. Existing alarms may be updated to include external sensors or upgrade to a system that tackles today's problems.

"We have warned again and again that property crime and robbery will rise during times of economic hardship, and today's figures paint a bleak picture.

"The government simply must heed the warnings and reconsider the planned 20% cuts to policing. We can only protect the public if we have enough police officers on our streets. Therefore the prospect of losing 34,000 officers and police staff by 2015 cannot be ignored."

THE sneering gunman in this alarming picture brandishes a sawn-off shotgun with expert ease.

He is a gangster, and he is only THIRTEEN years old.

Jobe Kilbride seen posturing as he is photographed by other thugs was the youngest of five teenagers who used this weapon to rob taxi drivers and stores during a vicious 10-day spree.

A man was shot in the neck. He lived and the gang escaped possible murder charges.

Police found mobile phone images of cocky Kilbride holding the lethal weapon.

In one photo he wears plastic gloves and hides his face beneath a hood in the same way he did during the gangs rampage through Liverpool.

Last night Melanie Jones, whose 11-year-old son Rhys was shot dead by a teenage gangster in the city in 2007, said: The photographs turned my stomach. Its just evil that they are so proud, standing their holding these guns. Its like a badge of honour for them.

Nothing has improved since Rhys death. The gangs are still on the streets and they still have guns. This is disrespectful to Rhyss memory. Im just glad no one was killed.

Today the five teeny mobsters are starting more than 20 years behind bars.

Judge Mark Brown ordered at Liverpool Crown Court that the boys should be named. All admitted armed robbery and gun charges. Kilbride was given four years. His brother Declan, 16, was locked up for nine years.

Declan Culshaw, the 15-year-old who acted as look-out in the gangs final robbery, faces five years and 14-year-old Dylan Currie was ordered to be detained for six years.

Gang boss Bradley Beveridge, 18, shouted abuse at Judge Brown as he was ordered to be locked up indefinitely.

The victims were chosen at random. The gang put on their hoods or pulled up their jumpers over their heads as they prowled the streets. The first victim was a taxi driver. When he pulled up he was faced with three figures with a shotgun who stole his takings and his cab, a silver Ford Mondeo. Another cabbie in a silver Ford Focus picked up three youths.The driver had a shotgun shoved in his face. The gang took cash and the taxi. The same day two youths with a shotgun burst into a store and fled with cash.

After raiding another store they were confronted by the shops owner.

Sri Lankan-born Rajeethan Pulendran and friend Mani Mohan were fired at. Mani was hit in the neck and chest. He said: Im lucky I made it.

Det Insp Andy OConner, who led the elite police Matrix unit, said: If kids get involved in this type of thing, there are only two outcomes they go to prison or risk getting killed.

In May ringleader Beveridge wrote a message on his Facebook page mocking the police attempts to catch his gang.

He posted: F**k the Matrix catch me if ye can.

Sant Jewellers and Sons in Southampton were targeted by two raiders in early August 2011, who smashed through the front entrance door and targeted the jewellery cabinets. The shop was installed with a Fog Bandit to protect the staff and the stock. It is now confirmed that the majority of burglars are using social media websites to help target victims and plan their crimes, a survey suggests.

Three quarters of convicted burglars questioned said sites including Google Street View now play a big part in their planning.

A similar amount said Twitter and Facebook - where users 'check in' to locations - are also being used by criminals.

Security expert Jonathan Lim told Sky News: "Burglars are analysing what's going on.

"They can see people's status updates, with people on Twitter saying 'I'm away on holiday having a great time'. If they know where you live it's like an open invitation."

Former burglar Richard Taylor said: "We're living in the age of the digital criminal and people are taking advantage of social media to access information about would-be victims.

"We'll tell them even when we're going away on holidays. We will let them know that we're not in. We're inviting them... round to our house."

Convicted burglars were asked the most likely things to lead them to target a property for Friedland Security's UK Home Security Report.

As well as outlining their use of new technology, a fifth of burglars said they monitored homeowners' daily routine before striking.

The survey of 50 convicted burglars also found the average home burglary only takes 10 minutes to commit.

A home with no visible security could be broken into in just two minutes, they revealed.

Average burglaries net criminals nearly £500, with most aiming for jewellery, cash and electrical goods although others targeted documents like passports.

Only a quarter of those polled said guard dogs were a deterrent and less than one in 10 were put off by nosy neighbours.

But more than half - 60% - said they would be discouraged from targeting a home if they knew it had a security alarm.

Home Office: domestic burglaries risen by 14%

Why? Because new figures from the Home Office show that there has been a 14% rise in domestic burglaries in the past year and bucks the trend of the past five years.

Reacting to this latest set of crime statistics, Simon Reed (vice-chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales) said: "While it's pleasing that overall crime is still falling, it's extremely worrying that reported burglary statistics have risen by 14%."

In May 2009, the Police Federation warned Government that an additional 2,000 police officers would be required over the following three years to maintain the current level of service, and predicted a rise in property crime as the recession deepened.

“We take no pleasure in being right on this occasion," stated Reed, "and witnessing the dramatic rise in reported burglaries. However, more worryingly and despite our predictions, the coalition Government has cut the policing budget by 20%, which is resulting in a fall in police officer numbers and is likely to result in yet further increases in crime."

In conclusion, Reed explained: "These statistics must serve as a stark warning to Government – stop, think and urgently reconsider the 20% cuts planned for the police service. It’s not too late to take the necessary steps to stop the inevitable 'Criminal’s Charter' that cuts of this magnitude will signal, and to do what's right to ensure the safety and protection of citizens of this country.”

Holiday burglary distress for young cancer victim

A YOUNG boy who suffers from a rare form of cancer had his dream holiday to Disneyland Paris marred by thieves.

Burglars broke into the home of Gazza Nelson in Radcliffe and stole the family’s spending money for the trip.

They also got away with £20,000-worth of personal items, including a bike, television, jewellery, computer consoles and games that had been wrapped up for Gazza’s fourth birthday.

Mum Alexis Roberts, aged 29, said: “The house was a total mess. They took everything — all my son’s birthday presents and £500 spending money.

“They trashed the house and ripped the fireplace off the wall.”

The family — including dad Gary Nelson, Terry, aged five, Chantelle, aged nine, and Kara, aged 11 — had just returned from a holiday in Spain early last week when they found their home ransacked.

Miss Roberts said: “We went on holiday for Gazza’s birthday because it’s been a tough year. He was too poorly to celebrate his last birthday because he was having chemotherapy. We’d had a fabulous time and the kids loved it.

“The children are upset because all their things have been taken and Gazza had no presents to open when we got back.”

The burglars used a ladder to break in through Kara’s bedroom window at the house in Spenser Avenue, between 8pm on June 27 and 4.30am the next morning.

They also stole the family’s Ford Fiesta, which was found abandoned and burnt out nearby.

Despite their distress, the family was still able to go to Paris last Thursday for the short Euro Disney trip, which had been paid for by the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Miss Roberts said: “Luckily, the tickets were arriving while we were away so I had them delivered to my mum’s house.”

Gazza was just two when he was diagnosed with a rare muscle cancer which affects fewer than 60 children in the UK each year.

Doctors discovered a tumour during an operation in February last year and tests showed it was a cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma.

The family appeared on a TV documentary called Super Nurses for Sky One last year and detectives are investigating the possibility that the thieves targeted the family after seeing the show.

Supt Mark Granby said: “While they were still able to go away, their spending money was taken away by some cruel and heartless thieves.

“We now need to give this family some peace of mind and find whoever is responsible.

“I want to appeal to anyone who either knows who might have done this or has information about the burglary to come forward. What may be seen as gossip could be vital to our investigation, so please call us.

“I would also like to directly appeal to the thieves: ‘You have caused a family who are already suffering unimaginable grief even more heartache. Show you have some decency and give what you have stolen back to this young boy and his family’.”

Due to a recent spate of burglaries targeting apartment blocks, residents of such properties are strongly encouraged to fully lock communal doors. If available, Chubb style locks should also be used as this will greatly decrease the criminals chances of successful entry.

The method of burglary appears to be for the suspects to break the glass in the main communal door, then reach in from outside to open the Yale style locks which are generally not deadlocked themselves. These burglaries would be made far more difficult to complete if residents ensured that extra precautions were taken in locking their communal doors. Ensuring that the key to the building is not visible or within reaching distance inside the premises will also serve as an effective preventative measure. Obviously care must be taken to ensure fire escape.

Don’t allow your neglect of these issues to result in a burglary taking place. If you are in a ground floor flat/apartment, a wireless alarm might be a sound investment as you can take it with you when you move and thee is little decor damage for the landlord to worry about.

Leeds burglary rates 'third highest in the UK"

On average, 26 burglaries were committed every day in Leeds last year

A BBC report shows that Leeds has some of the highest rates of burglary in the country.

The Audit Commission study said that in some parts of the city, burglary rates are three times the national average.

Deprived areas like Beeston, Harehills and Armley and places with lots of students such as Headingley were the worst affected.

The report blamed poor quality housing and a network that allows for easy disposal of stolen goods.

It suggested that "the ability to rapidly convert stolen goods into ready cash is a key influence on young burglars".

The report also noted that the 60,000-strong student population, who generally live in poor quality rented accommodation and are away for long periods, proved attractive to burglars.

Although there has been some improvement in burglary rates in over the past year, in the past three years the gap between Leeds and the rest of the country has widened.

Between April 2007 and March 2010 the rate nationally went down by 4%, whereas in Leeds it went up by 13%.

On average, 26 burglaries were committed daily in the city last year.

When it comes to tackling crime at the source, Insp Steve Lavell, from the Safer Leeds Partnership, said burglary "has become a young people's crime in Leeds".

'Young people's crime'

His department found that just under half of offenders in the city are aged between 15 and 18.

One 18-year-old from the problem area of Halton Moor said young men committed burglaries because they were "bored" and had nothing to do in their area.

However youth worker Yvonne Crowder, from Beeston, who lost almost all her possessions when she was burgled, said it came down to money.

"There's plenty to do out there, the problem is these young people don't have the funds to go and do it."

The Audit Commission recommended that the police develop a more focused strategy with clear goals to deal with the problem, particularly when it comes to stolen goods networks.

The Justice Secretary is to make squatting illegal for the first time in England and Wales in a bid to end the menace of the home occupiers.

And those who still force their way in to empty properties will face a prison sentence.

The new law will end the “nightmare” of home owners having to fight lengthy legal battles in the courts in order to evict squatters.

Instead the police will be able to force entry and arrest anyone who has occupied a property.

There are an estimated 100,000 incidents of squatting every year with victims including Guy Ritchie, the film director.

A senior Whitehall source told The Daily Telegraph Mr Clarke has made changing the law a priority because he is sick of seeing cases of law-abiding people fighting to regain possession of their properties.

The source said: “Ken has had enough of seeing hard working home owners battle to squatters out.

“He is determined to use the full force of the law to save people from the nightmare of having to fight to get their houses back.

“The days of 'squatters’ rights' will be over.”

Squatting is not currently a criminal offence in England and Wales and instead it is up to the owners to use the civil courts to enforce their rights, which can turn in to lengthy and expensive legal battles.

They must also prove to the courts that they are either a ''displaced residential occupier'' – someone who has returned from holiday to find squatters in their house – or a ''protected intended occupier'', who is intending to move into an empty property.

In contrast, squatters are also protected by other laws, including the Criminal Law Act 1977, which prevents a home owner forcing their way back in because it makes it an offence to use violence to gain access when there is someone on the premises who is opposed to entry.

They can also take advantage of the controversial law on "adverse possession", which can allow someone who has occupied a building for 10 years to claim ownership of it.

One squatter group, known as The Really Free School, has occupied a series of properties in London, including a building in Bloomsbury Square belonging to an antiques expert and a £6 million house owned by Mr Ritchie. Then they took over an empty pub near Oxford Street before moving on to another near Leicester Square.

Earlier this year, businessman John Hamilton-Brown was reduced to begging through his own letterbox for squatters to leave his £1 million home.

In 2009 squatters moved into David Blunkett's former grace and favour mansion in central London while others took over a £33 million house close to Nigella Lawson's home in Eaton Square, central London.

Officials are now drawing up plans to such property invasions illegal with a likely maximum penalty of a custodial sentence.

Squatting is already a criminal offence in Scotland and someone guilty of it could be sentenced to 21 days in jail.

Police cutbacks have left firms that are victims of burglary being sent DIY finger-printing kits to undertake their own investigations.

Companies have been told: ‘Please carry out DIY checks on your workers’, to save police time and money checking their own employees as suspects.

The DIY packs are just part of the cuts being made by police before their budgets are reduced by a whopping 20 per cent by 2014-15.

Volunteers are also being signed up to help with forensic work, which was previously performed by highly-skilled officers.

Lincolnshire’s Chief Constable Richard Crompton told the News Of The World: ‘We are interested in doing some work with volunteers, training them to assist at very, very low-grade forensic scenes.

Volunteers are also being enlisted to help walk police dogs, as staff shortages increase.

The tabloid claimed that other forces have also been selling police cars and reducing the number of traffic officers while tightening their budgets. And as the number of police officers whittle away, there has been a big increase in Community Support Officers (PCSOs) the chairman of Dorset Police Federation, Clive Chamberlain, said.

Mr Fahy said: ‘It seems that sometimes parents are under great stress, suffering severe mental health issues – and young people are very vulnerable.
Last week Greater Manchester Chief Constable Peter Fahy enraged the Home Office by saying government spending cuts could put vulnerable children at risk, due to the reductions in police officers and council services.

‘The worrying aspect is not only are we making reductions, but charities and voluntary organisations are also at severe risk.’

The Home Office dismissed his claims though, in a statement saying: ‘We do not expect forces to stop providing essential policing services and it’s utterly irresponsible to use language like this.

Having been subjected to a burglary once, this should be to some degree an easy subject to write about. First of all the idea that a stranger had been in my home and ransacked my house was disgusting and frankly sickening. I did not want to sleep on the disheveled bed, I didn’t want to touch the bureau drawer’s contents that were strewn all over the room, or the closet items scattered through-out the house. The general mess they left did make me wonder what kind of people they were that would try to destroy our home, yet not hurt our little dog!

My first thought was “Oh my goodness, my groceries are gone!” I had gone to the grocery store that day for a couple weeks supply of groceries, and for a young growing family, it wasn’t a small amount of cash then and it sure wouldn’t be now. I hasten to add, none of my groceries were gone, but a few other possessions were.

Now for items I’d hate to lose in a burglary?

Tools
Collector items
Paintings
Automobile
Fuel from my car
Lawn equipment
Silverware

To put these in any kind of order would be left up to each individual. Personally I would hate to start replacing any on the list.

Collectors’ items are just that, items we’ve picked up over the years with thought. Whether on a vacation, or gifts from others, some collectors have obtained an overall expensive assortment.

Usually if one has cash in the house, it is not much more than loose change thrown on the dresser, or placed in a coffee can for a special golf lesson. More money than that however would be enough to sit down and cry over.

Some collect paintings. Whether painted by a friend, someone in the family or a famous artist, paintings are still a treasure we don’t want to part with.

Another thing for an upset stomach is to go outside in the morning to find the car gone. May as well forget about going to work that day for the job ahead will take priority. Things like calling the police to make a report, answering endless questions from both the insurance company and the police and beating yourself over the head for not locking the doors as you normally do will take up the greater portion of the day.

An extension to the automobile is having the fuel tank read -E- when we knew we had enough fuel to get to work. Stealing fuel is not as easy as it once was, but still there are thieves out there who are desperate enough to tear up a tank if they want fuel bad enough.

To have jewelry taken, whether it is a treasured item or costume jewelry is terrible. One feeling we experience is “why would they want my stuff”. It may be stuff to us but remember it is our stuff.

One word of caution for all of us is this: Take precaution before anything does happen. Make a video recording of all your electronics along with their serial number, make and model. Anything of value to you whether big or small, should be recorded by video and on paper then given to a family member, put in a safe deposit box, or a fireproof safe.

Believe me being mugged and having my purse taken was bad enough, and then walking into my house late one evening and seeing my home ransacked by thugs, gives me certain sympathy for those who can relate. It also gives me a desire to warn those to whom it has not happened – so you can have less regrets if it ever should.

In addition to the above, we would suggest that an alarm is fitted that summons appropriate people to deter/identify/capture the perpetrators. If serious valuables are left in the property, consider security fog - if you can't see it, you can't steal it!

Going on holiday over the Christmas break?

A new study by the UKs fastest growing online independent travel agent has revealed that 9% of British holidaymakers have been burgled whilst on holiday; whilst 81% of respondents admitted that they dont ask a friend or relative to check on their house during their time away.

Latest research from one of the UKs leading online independent travel agents has shown the dangers of leaving your home unsecured when going on holiday; with the founders offering advice on how to prevent burglaries when away.

Carried out by www.sunshine.co.uk; the study polled 1,962 Britons who had been on holiday in the past year to find out whether they'd ever been a victim of burglary when on holiday, either in the UK or abroad.

Almost 1 in 10 of the respondents, 9%, claimed they had been burgled whilst on holiday. These respondents were then asked if there were any contributing factors that led to them being burgled, aside from their house being unattended. 37% admitted that they hadnt left their house adequately secure, meaning that theyd either left a window or door open or unlocked.

81% of the total respondents to the study admitted that they dont bother asking a friend or relative to check on their house when they are on holiday. Of these, 26% explained that they didnt think they would need anybody to look in on their home when they are away; whilst 42% said they wouldnt want to put someone out by asking them.

None of the respondents who had been burgled during their holiday had asked a friend or family member to check on their home.

The respondents who dont ask someone to check on their home when on holiday were further asked "Do you take any measures to prevent your home being burgled whilst you were on holiday?" 6% said that they make use of plug-in timers to operate their lights, whilst 4% said that they leave lights on permanently in their house.

1. Give your house key to someone you trust and ask them to keep an eye on your property. Asking someone to draw your curtains in the evening and open them in the morning can be a good way to make your house appear occupied, and detract the attention of burglars.

2. Ensure that all windows and doors are locked and secure.

3. Invest in plug-in timers to operate your lights, as they will give the illusion that somebody is home.

4. If you dont already have one, look into the possibility of getting a monitored security alarm for your home that calls a key-holder rather than just making a noise. If you cant afford that, discuss monthly payment options.

5. Whilst probably the more expensive option, security cameras are a fantastic idea. Even if they are not working cameras, the presence of them can deter burglars.

6. Leave a car on your driveway, or outside your house. Again, this will make it more difficult for a burglar to decipher if the house is occupied or not; thus decreasing chances of a break-in.

POLICE chiefs have warned residents that insurance companies could refuse to pay up if homeowners have failed to take sufficient safety precautions before being burgled.

It follows a burglary Caversham two weeks ago where the insurance company rejected the victim’s claim because they failed to double lock the front door.

Reading crime reduction advisor John McNicholas said: “Simple home security steps are vital not only to keep burglars out but also to ensure that if you are unfortunate enough to suffer a burglary your insurance will be valid.

“If your home is not properly locked you may not only face the trauma of the break-in itself, but you could discover your insurance company will not pay up.”

It could have been a scene from a gangster movie, one shop worker said.
And passers-by who witnessed this robbery in London yesterday certainly treated it like one.
While self-preservation may have stopped them from intervening, they weren't too scared to stand there and enjoy the show.
One older gentleman was so unconcerned (or so oblivious) that he strolled right past the motorbike riding gang breaking into the branch of jewellers Mappin & Webb at 11.20am.

The store's staff were probably a little more concerned as the robbers, still wearing their helmets, smashed the window on Old Bond Street. Luckily, no one was hurt.

The gang grabbed tens of thousands of pounds worth of loot, and then roared away.
There were claims that police officers took 25 minutes to arrive on the scene, giving the robbers plenty of time. Witness Petra Remias, 25, who works in a shop opposite said: 'The men started banging on the window with a huge hammer - it made a horrible noise.
'It was like a gangster movie. People in the street started gathering around in a semi-circle to watch.
'The raid lasted between five and ten minutes, it wasn't quick.'

Gemma Flitton, 29, works in the Ralph Lauren showroom above Mappin & Webb. She said: 'It felt like an earthquake.
'We could feel the sledgehammer blows as they vibrated through our floor.
'It was extraordinary because there were dozens of people watching and taking pictures. At least 60 people were on the pavement opposite.'
Mappin & Webb has proved a popular target for smash-and-grab gangs. The same branch on the junction with Piccadilly suffered a similar raid last year.
And the Regent Street store was raided three times in 2008. In one attack a Vauxhall Vectra was driven through the front doors.
In 2006, two teenagers were jailed after stealing £26,000 of goods from Mappin & Webb in Fenchurch Street A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: 'Westminster CID are investigating. We have not been informed of any injuries.'
The spokesman rejected claims that it took officers 25 minutes to reach the scene, saying they attended within two minutes of receiving the call.
Forensic officers yesterday refused to say what was taken from the store and what it was worth.

A spokesman for Mappin & Webb declined to comment. The chain acts as silversmith to the Queen and Prince Charles.
A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: 'At 11.17 police were called by a member of the public reporting a robbery in progress at Mappin and Webb, Old Bond Street, officers were immediately despatched.
'A call was also received at 11.18 by a PCSO who was in the area and had begun pursuing the suspects on foot as they made off down Pall Mall.
'At 11.20 details of bikes were despatched over the radio and at 11.21 the officers in the response car were pursuing the suspects in the direction of Duke Street. Air support was also in attendance.
'Officers lost sight of the suspects in Wimbourne Street and returned to the scene at Mappin and Webb, arriving at 11.36. During this time a number of PCSOs had already attended the scene at Mappin and Webb.'

GREATER Manchester has the worst level of household burglaries in the country, a meeting of a police watchdog heard.
Greater Manchester Police Authority was yesterday told that burglary figures for the region were the worst in the country per 1,000 households.
Chief Constable Peter Fahy said: “For some reason there seems to be something in Greater Manchester that produces more burglars than anywhere else.”
The meeting was told that the region fared better in other areas like serious violent crimes and was told that it was something in the “make up” of the region that made it a hotspot for burglary.
Cllr Paul Murphy, chairman of the Greater Manchester Police Authority, said: “It’s a fact we have still got the worst burglary figures in the UK. It’s just staggering.”
Cllr Murphy said there needed to be investigations to get behind the problem which, he said, was connected to social inequality.
He added: “Once we understand the dynamics, we can understand the problem and begin to address the problem.”
The meeting was also told that police are drawing resources from areas of Greater Manchester to enable them to focus on more troubled neighbourhoods.
Mr Fahy said the force needed to concentrate on “hotspot areas” which it did by using officers from divisions where crime was lower.
He said: “What is very clear is that certain areas experience more crime and criminality than other areas so the best thing we can do is to concentrate very much on those areas.”
He said the officers are used during force-wide operations and crackdowns and that it enabled police to target persistent offenders.

Security specialist The Alarming Man has introduced a new range of wireless and battery-powered security devices that can be installed in fields, stable yards and tackrooms without the need for mains power.

The system works using movement sensors and battery-powered digital videos cameras. When a sensor is tripped the camera records a 10sec video clip, which is then sent to a monitoring centre using mobile phone technology. The video is immediately reviewed by an individual at the 24/7 monitoring centre, who will decide whether to call the police, contact the keyholder or take no action.

The video can also be emailed to the keyholder if required, enabling the yard owner to keep abreast of all alarm activations. The system can include an audible alarm, or not, as required.

David Cole of The Alarming Man explains: "By having the video reviewed by a real person, they can decide whether the situation requires action or not. For example if a squirrel trips off the sensor then no action is required, but if a horse has let itself out of its stable and is wandering around when no-one is on the yard, then the keyholder would be notified.

"If the keyholder has left the yard, set the alarm and then a horse is led out of the stables by a third party, then the police and the keyholder would be notified.

The system uses batteries which last a minimum of two years, multiple cameras can be included and the range is approx 700m from the cameras to the control box, which sends the video to the control centre. GPRS technology means the system can be used anywhere that there is a mobile phone signal.

NEW research by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health CIEH highlights that businesses understanding of the implications of a prosecution under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act is worryingly low.

The survey of 500 business decision-makers revealed that 57% of businesses were unaware that they could be subject to a publicity order if found guilty of a fatal accident at work.

The possibility of such an order is one of the three punishments that could be given to guilt companies under the Act. Firms are also likely to be punished with a heavy fine of up to 10% of turnover and an order to put in place measures to ensure that there is no repeat of the incident that resulted in the death.

A publicity order means the court can order that the particulars of the offence, conviction, any fine and the terms of any remedial order be published by the defendant within a specified period. Breach of a publicity order will in itself be an offence, punishable by an unlimited fine.

Sectors that were most aware of the changes were travel and transport (53%), retail, catering and leisure (47%) and small and medium-sized enterprises (42%) but those least knowledgeable were manufacturing, engineering, utilities and healthcare (35%).

When asked about the implications of breaching the Act, 59% of businesses regarded a publicity order as the greater threat. This is echoed within most individual industries, except for manufacturing, engineering and utilities.

In launching the findings of the research CIEH chief executive Graham Jukes, said: 'This poll research highlights the lack of awareness in most businesses of the effect that an accident at work may have on a firm's ability to trade in the future.

'Business leaders must act proportionately but if they fail to properly resource health and safety and something goes wrong then it will not just be the victim that suffers but the business as a whole through the link to the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act.'
